Accessibility

This site is built to be used with a screen reader, a keyboard, magnification, or reduced motion. Here is where that stands, honestly.

Face by Cait aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. That standard is the one referenced by the Americans with Disabilities Act for websites, and it is what we build and test against.

Listening to this site

You do not need a special button or plugin to have this site read aloud. Screen readers already built into your device do it: VoiceOver on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, TalkBack on Android, Narrator on Windows, and NVDA or JAWS on a desktop computer. Our job is to structure the site so those tools read it in a sensible order and describe what they find.

That is why you will not find a floating accessibility widget here. Those overlays sit on top of a page and often interfere with the screen reader a visitor already uses. We would rather fix the page underneath.

What is in place

  • Headings run in order on every page, so a screen reader can jump between sections instead of reading top to bottom.
  • A skip link at the top of every page jumps past the header and menu straight to the content.
  • Every interactive element shows a visible outline when reached by keyboard, on both the light and dark sections.
  • Buttons and links are sized to be tapped accurately on a phone.
  • Form fields have real labels, required fields are marked, and errors are announced rather than only shown.
  • Text contrast is measured against its actual background, including text placed over photographs.
  • If your device is set to reduce motion, the animations here are reduced to match.
  • Images carry descriptions, and decorative ones are hidden from screen readers so they do not add noise.

Known limitations

We consider this site partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 AA. Partially conformant means most of the standard is met and some parts have not been fully verified yet.

  • Booking happens on Jane, a scheduling service we do not control. Its accessibility is set by its provider. If you have trouble booking there, call the studio and we will book the appointment for you.
  • We have not yet completed testing with every screen reader and browser combination.
  • Journal entries are added over time and are reviewed as they are published rather than in a single pass.

If any part of this site is difficult to use, we want to hear about it, and we will fix it. Tell us the page and what happened, and if you can, the device and screen reader you were using.
